Nurse License Verification: Every State, in One Place
Pick the state, go straight to the official Nursys search, and run an OIG, SAM.gov and state Medicaid exclusion check for the same nurse. For RNs, LPNs, APRNs and nurse practitioners.
Find the Official License Search
Choose a state to see its official medical license search, then check the same person’s NPI and exclusion status.
How to Verify a Nurse License in 3 Steps
- Search Nursys QuickConfirm (nursys.com) by name or license number. It covers boards that share data with NCSBN.
- Check the state board if the state isn’t in Nursys or you need a primary-source printout. Search the board of nursing’s site for the state that issued the license.
- Screen for exclusions: a valid license doesn’t mean the nurse can work on Medicare or Medicaid patients. Run the OIG, SAM.gov and state list check from the same tool.
Compact Licenses
Under the Nurse Licensure Compact, a nurse with a multistate license from their home state can practise in other compact states. Verify the home-state license and its multistate status.
What This Page Can’t Do
- We don’t read license records ourselves; we send you to the official Nursys or board search, which is the source to rely on.
- Discipline that a board hasn’t made public won’t appear anywhere online.

How do I verify a nurse’s license for free?
Use Nursys QuickConfirm from NCSBN, which NCSBN describes as a free service, or the board of nursing search for the state that issued the license. Pick the state above to get the right official link, then add the nurse’s name to run the NPI and exclusion checks.
What is Nursys?
Nursys is the national nurse license database run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), with license data supplied by participating boards of nursing. QuickConfirm shows license status, type, expiry and any public discipline the board reports.
Does a multistate (compact) license show in Nursys?
Yes, where the home state participates. A multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact lets the nurse practise in other compact states; Nursys shows the home-state license and its multistate status.
Is a license check enough before hiring a nurse?
No. Also check the OIG exclusion list, SAM.gov and your state’s Medicaid exclusion list, and for nurse practitioners the NPI and Medicare status. The tool above runs those checks for the same name.
Can I get alerts when a nurse’s license changes?
Nursys e-Notify sends license status alerts to employers who enroll. For exclusions and NPI changes, Practice Pro and Provider Watch re-check your saved list on a schedule and email you.
