Compare Nursing Homes, Home Health and Hospitals Side by Side

Add up to three facilities in any state and see Medicare’s star ratings, inspections, staffing, abuse citations and services next to each other, with the best of each highlighted.

How to Read the Comparison

Nursing homes. Start with the health inspection rating: it’s based on what state inspectors actually found. Then look at staffing: more nurse and aide time per resident usually means more attention. An abuse citation is a serious finding; ask the home what changed since.

Home health agencies. The quality of patient care rating shows how often patients improve and avoid going back to hospital. Also check which services each agency offers: not all provide therapy or aide visits.

Hospitals. The overall rating summarizes mortality, safety, readmissions, patient experience and timely care. For planned surgery, compare a few; in an emergency, go to the nearest emergency department.

Hospices. Every hospice listed is Medicare-certified. Medicare publishes family survey results instead of one star rating; open each hospice’s Care Compare page to read them.

How do I compare nursing homes?

Choose your state, add up to three nursing homes, and compare Medicare’s overall star rating and its three parts: health inspections, staffing and quality of resident care. Check whether any home has an abuse citation, then read each home’s latest inspection report on Medicare Care Compare and visit in person.

Where do the ratings come from?

From Medicare Care Compare, the official CMS data published in the Provider Data Catalog. We load the newest release on every update and show its date. The ratings are Medicare’s, not ours.

What do nursing home star ratings mean?

Medicare rates each nursing home from 1 to 5 stars overall. The overall rating starts from the health inspection rating and is adjusted for staffing and quality measures. Five stars is much above average, one star much below average.

What does the abuse citation mean?

Medicare shows a red hand icon for nursing homes cited for abuse, neglect or exploitation in recent inspections. It doesn’t mean abuse is happening now, but it’s a serious finding to ask the home about.

How are home health agencies rated?

Medicare’s quality of patient care star rating (1 to 5) reflects how often patients get better at walking, bathing and breathing, how quickly care starts, and how often patients go back to hospital.

Why does a facility show “Not rated”?

Medicare doesn’t rate facilities without enough recent data, such as new or small facilities and many critical access hospitals. Hospices have no single star rating; their family survey and quality results are on Care Compare.

Is this tool free?

Yes. No sign-up. You can share the comparison link or save it as a PDF.
